On December 29, 2021, the Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers issued a statement expressing its concern about the summons of journalist Gianna Papadakou by the investigating judge in the Papaggelopoulos-Mionis case.
The statement stresses that reporting and investigative journalism, which are components of the freedom of information, protected by the Constitution, cannot be prosecuted.
In fact, a year and a half ago, an attempt was made to summon the same journalist by the Special Preliminary Committee of the Parliament, although the summons was ultimately revoked following a statement of support from the same Union.
In a state governed by the rule of law, individual rights are protected as well as the freedom of the press, and journalists have the right to freely and independently exercise their profession without censorship or influence.
Despite the guarantee of the freedom of the press under Article 14 of the Constitution, journalist Gianna Papadakou is called upon to defend herself in court for exercising her profession. The Union stresses that it is unacceptable to prosecute reporting and investigative journalism, as they are constituent elements of the freedom of information protected by the Constitution.
