On April 27, 2021, The Journalists’ Union of Athens Daily Newspapers issued an announcement about the murder of journalist Giorgos Karaivaz, which was committed on April 9: “The journalists of Greece and society as a whole insist that the murder of our colleague Giorgos Karaivaz is fully investigated. We call on the authorities to step up their efforts to apprehend the killers and bring them to justice,” they say, adding that “threats will not silence journalists.”
In a state that adheres to the Rule of Law, both individual rights and the freedom of the press are protected. Journalists have the right to practice their work freely and independently, without censorship or influence, and without threats or violence.
In the context of securing Freedom of the Press as guaranteed by and the protection of journalists from threats and violence, the largest Greek, International and European journalist unions call for full investigation of the “cowardly murder” of Giorgos Karaivaz, a crime aimed at silencing free speech.
